IVF treatment, process and cost

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an advanced reproductive technology also known as Test Tube Baby that helps couples unable to conceive naturally and suffering from any infertility issues achieve pregnancy. The process involves retrieving eggs from the ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in an advanced reproductive laboratory, and then transferring the healthiest embryo into the uterus.

At Femcare Fertility, we specialize in high-success-rate IVF treatments using state-of-the-art technology to ensure every couple gets a personalized treatment plan to fulfil their dream of parenthood. Our experienced infertility specialists and embryologists provide complete care to help couples conceive and complete their family.

Who Needs IVF treatment?

Infertility can be caused due to male and/or female factors (85% of cases) or can just be unexplained in about 15% cases. IVF is recommended for couples facing:

1. Female Infertility Issues:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes : Which can prevent sperm from reaching the egg.
  • PCOS or PCOD : PCOS, full form is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disorder) can also be a reason for not able to conceive as PCOS lead to irregular ovulation.
  • Endometriosis : which affects egg quality and implantation.
  • Ovulation disorders : This can be a reason in some couples as eggs are not released regularly.
  • Age-related infertility : as with age the egg quality and number declines. This can be known by AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) blood test.
  • Absence or uterus or ovaries due to genetic factors

2. Male Infertility Issues:

  • Issues with sperm production leading to low sperm counts, reduced motility & quality or no sperm production at all (azoospermia) – Due to testicular, hormonal or genetic problems
  • Issues with sperm delivery – Low counts due to obstruction in the reproductive tract; erectile dysfunction/ premature ejaculation/ retrograde ejaculation

Other reason can also include any genetic diseases, multiple failed IUI cycles or recurrent miscarriages. Along with all these, lifestyle factors can affect fertility in both partners – Smoking, drinking, obesity, excess exercise, poor diet, stress, etc.

Step-by-Step IVF Process at Femcare Fertility

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

  • A detailed medical history is taken, and tests like AMH, hormonal evaluation, ultrasound, and semen analysis are done to understand the husband and wife's fertility profile. These tests help understand the main reason of infertility.

Step 2: Ovarian stimulation and monitoring

  • Medicines & injections are used to stimulate the ovaries for production of more number of eggs instead of just one per cycle.
  • The egg follicle maturation is monitored by daily sonographies and blood hormone levels. When the follicles are matured, a booster injection is given for the final development of the eggs just before ovulation.

Step 3: Egg Retrieval (Oocyte Aspiration)

  • On maturation, about 10-20 eggs are taken from the ovaries through a thin needle, guided by ultrasound.
  • The woman is admitted for a few hours and this is carried out under general anaesthesia. The procedure is completed in about 30 minutes.

Step 4: Sperm Collection & Preparation

  • The partner's sperm sample is collected and prepared for fertilization.
  • In cases of severe male infertility, sperm can be retrieved through TESA/PESA procedures.
  • If patient is taking donor sperm treatment, then donor sperms are thawed before using.

Step 5: Fertilization (IVF or ICSI)

  • The eggs are placed in a special solution, large number of good quality sperms are chosen and introduced to the eggs.
  • They are kept in a sterilized, controlled environment at optimal temperature and we wait for the magic to happen ! The eggs are checked for fertilization on the next day.

Step 6: Embryo Culture & Monitoring

  • They are kept in a sterilized, controlled environment at optimal temperature and we wait for the magic to happen ! The eggs are checked for fertilization on the next day.
  • Fertilized eggs develop into embryos over 3-5 days in a controlled lab environment.

Step 7: Embryo Transfer

  • The best-quality embryo is transferred into the woman’s uterus through a simple procedure.
  • Extra embryos can be frozen (cryopreservation) for future use.

Sometimes the specialist may suggest laser assisted hatched (LAH) of the embryo(s) before transfer to improve chances of attachment.
Post transfer, certain medications and hormone injections are prescribed to support the embryo and promote pregnancy. Pregnancy testing: The D-day arrives after 2 weeks when pregnancy can be checked via a blood test. Once you receive the good news, a sonography will be scheduled the week after to see the pregnancy development followed by one and half months to hear the baby’s precious heartbeat! And so begins your parenthood journey !

FAQs

1. What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?

Both IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) help with conception, but the key difference is in the fertilization process. In IVF, eggs and sperm are combined in a lab for natural fertilization, while in ICSI, a single, high-quality sperm is directly injected into an egg. ICSI is recommended for severe male infertility cases, such as low sperm count or motility issues.

2. What is the difference between IVF and Test Tube Baby?

IVF and test tube baby are the same process. There is no medical difference between a baby conceived through IVF and a test tube baby. "Test tube baby" is a non-medical, older term that was used to describe what we now call "IVF".

3. Is ICSI better than IVF for male infertility?

Yes, ICSI is the preferred method for fertilization in case of male infertility with poor sperm quality, low count, or previous IVF failures. It ensures higher fertilization rates by selecting the best sperm for fertilization, which improves the chances of success. At Femcare Fertility, our ICSI specialists use advanced technology to maximize pregnancy rates.

4. How to choose the best IVF center with a high success rate?
